Creating a trusted space for community support

In March 2020, the world was shaken by the arrival of COVID-19. The term pandemic was unfamiliar to many of us. Confusing news, incomplete information, rumors, and myths spread quickly, creating uncertainty, misinformation, and a lack of reliable updates. Communities everywhere needed a trusted source for accurate, up-to-date information.

The Latino community in King County was no exception. Most news outlets reported in English, making timely Spanish-language information hard to find. Information in Spanish was delayed and sporadic.

By May of 2020, a dedicated group of Latinx Community Response members from Public Health, along with local leaders, began creating a trusted space of real and trusted information—in Spanish—that would serve to support our dear Latino community in King County. Con Confianza y en Comunidad was born.

Five years of impact

Now, five years later, with over 170 meetings covering key community topics, Con Confianza y en Comunidad continues to provide reliable, consistent information to Spanish-speakers facing language barriers and limited access to public resources.

This effort is not the work of one group alone—it has been a team effort, with organizations working together to share critical information and resources. The audience includes community leaders, workers, parents, and students.

Voices from the community

Dr. Sonia Morales from Molina Healthcare has been part of this journey, staying informed and sharing knowledge with others. She says:

“I want to thank the Con Confianza y en Comunidad team for giving the Latino community a space to discuss important topics over the past five years. I’ve seen the group grow, bringing together different organizations to cover health issues—including COVID-19—as well as community concerns like sexual abuse, drug use, education, mental health, and immigration.”

Giselle Zapata-García, Public Health’s Equity & Community Engagement Manager and a founding member of this project, shares her thoughts on this important milestone:

“It fills me with great joy to see Con Confianza y en Comunidad celebrating five years. From the start, this space was built to provide real-time, trusted public health information. Even more importantly, it gave our community a direct connection to Public Health—to ask questions, share concerns, and access resources. Thanks to the dedication of Public Health staff and community leaders, this important space continues to thrive. Congratulations! May this work never end!”

Susana Manriquez, Administrator at Plaza Centro Rendu is a key member of the “star team” behind Con Confianza y en Comunidad. She explains how this project has positively impacted her clients:

“The Con Confianza y en Comunidad meetings have helped the Centro Rendu community gain access to resources, learning opportunities, and timely health updates. These meetings provide us with essential tools and awareness regarding the most up to date health related information for our community. They share information about upcoming events in different locations and the different resources. The Centro Rendu community deeply appreciates this wonderful teamwork!”
