A Playground for Biking: Top tips for safe family bike rides

Riding a bicycle is a delightful way to explore the outdoors. It contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and we get to appreciate the diverse landscapes and locales that King County has to offer. So, throughout May, we will showcase three picturesque, enjoyable, and family-friendly trails in King County where residents can bike safely. We’ll also offer bike safety tips to celebrate Bicycle Safety Month!

Week 1 (May 8-11): Bike Playground at Dick Thurnau Memorial Park in White Center.

Also known as a Traffic Garden, the Bike Playground at Dick Thurnau Memorial Park opened in 2016. It draws inspiration from European parks that teach children how to ride their bikes in traffic. The painted ground looks like a small version of a real-life road experience, complete with intersections, crosswalks, and roundabouts. Arrows indicate the correct flow of traffic, and there are plenty of curving lanes to keep it fun and challenging.

In addition, the park features a play area, restrooms, and a picnic shelter overlooking Hicklin Lake. Plus, if you’re a disc golf fan, there is a 20-hole course you can enjoy without feeling rushed during weekdays or in winter. So, whether you’re biking, playing disc golf, or simply enjoying the outdoors, the Dick Thurnau Memorial Park has something for everyone!

Details: The park is at 11050 10th Avenue SW, Seattle 98146. Its hours of operation are Wednesday 10 am—1 pm, Thursday 10 am—1 pm, and Saturday 9 am—noon. The park is closed Sunday through Tuesday. There is plenty of parking.

Bicycle Safety Reminder: Wear a helmet every time you ride a bike, and make it a rule that your kids wear helmets every time they ride. Bicycle helmets can prevent head and brain injuries, so using one makes sense.
