Cases of mpox (formerly known as “monkeypox”) are on the rise in the Puget Sound region, including here in King County. Public Health is encouraging those who are eligible to get the two-shot mpox vaccine series.
Mpox—previously known as monkeypox—hasn’t made headlines lately like it did last summer, but new cases have been reported in the United States, including right here in King County. Unvaccinated people and people who have not received both doses may still be at risk. Fortunately, mpox vaccine is easier to get than last year, so, now is a great time to get an mpox vaccination if you are recommended to receive the vaccine.
King County Health Officer Dr. Jeff Duchin held a media briefing on September 6, 2022, to share information and take questions about the new COVID-19 booster, as well as the local monkeypox outbreak.
MPV cases in the United States and locally here in King County have increased over the past several weeks. As of August 24, 2022, 310 King County residents have been diagnosed with MPV, an increase from 48 cases in mid-July.
